Luke Cage, Bad Dudes, and Not Being Bulletproof

This gallery contains 2 photos.

Quipped a Tulsa, Oklahoma law enforcement officer hovering above a local street just moments before Terence Crutcher was murdered by the state in the form of Officer Betty Shelby. Crutcher, like many before him fell prey to a combination of racism, a heavy-handed culture of law enforcement, fear, and what Claude Brown referred to as looking like “bad nigger” in “Manchild in the Promised Land.” As harsh of a descriptor as it sounds “Bad nigger” like “bad motherfucker” has particular connotations to many of us. On Speaking Ill of the Recently Departed, the Need for Sainthood, and the Impossible Standards used When it Comes Time to Mourn Dead Black Boys

Earlier this morning I came across an article from the New York Times entitled “A Teenager Grappling With Problems and Promise” penned by John Eligon. The teenager in question is Michael Brown who was murdered by police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, MO. There’s no need to recap the actions and goings on surrounding Brown’s death and if you’re not familiar with it then you’re either a corpse or purposely keeping yourself ignorant of current events. Random Questions– I Don’t Even Know, Man

During the aftermath of the George Zimmerman trial I find myself dumbfounded and laden with questions. As a black man, an American, and somewhat responsible citizen I find myself with nothing but questions about my existence and other things that many just either take for granted or are not aware of in the first place. As my friend O, says “It’s still very real in the field.” Continue reading

Random Happenings With Me and Your Mama

This gallery contains 1 photos.

To say that the last seven or so months of my life have been somewhat interesting would be an understatement. Within that time I’ve lost both parents, gotten engaged, and toppled two third world governments. Yeah, I’ve been a little occupied with things and my thoughts are as random as ever. Daddy Issues and the Hour-Long Drama

This gallery contains 2 photos.

Thursday night when it became apparent that my NCAA brackets were going to end up looking like Mitch “Blood” Green’s face after his infamous street fight with Mike Tyson, I whipped out my Kindle and watched this week’s episode of TNT’s Southland. [i] After I finished watching I was reminded of an article the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Yes, that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) wrote for the most recent issue of Esquire entitled “What Primetime TV Tells Us About Being a Man” which deals with the rights and wrongs of how men are depicted on television.

The Thing About The Tuck Rule and Why Raiders Fans Should Get Over It.

This gallery contains 1 photos.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away the Oakland Raiders and the New England Patriots got together in an AFC Divisional Playoff Game. It was snowy night in Foxboro, Massachusetts which made for a really interesting football game in many, many ways. Continue reading

The Things I Think When I’m Shaving My Head

During the course of a week I spend a goodly amount of time in front of a sink and mirror, shaving my head. This mostly due to the facts that I have a large head, I like my sh*t to look nice and tight, and I don’t have the accent to pull of the Jason Statham cut. One of the ancillary effects that come from me: A. Having a large head B. Favoring my sh*t looking nice and tight and finally C. Not having the accent to pull of the eroded hairline look is that I use my time in front of the sink and mirror to reflect on life and brainstorm. Continue reading
