Luke Cage, Bad Dudes, and Not Being Bulletproof

This gallery contains 2 photos.

Quipped a Tulsa, Oklahoma law enforcement officer hovering above a local street just moments before Terence Crutcher was murdered by the state in the form of Officer Betty Shelby. Crutcher, like many before him fell prey to a combination of racism, a heavy-handed culture of law enforcement, fear, and what Claude Brown referred to as looking like “bad nigger” in “Manchild in the Promised Land.” As harsh of a descriptor as it sounds “Bad nigger” like “bad motherfucker” has particular connotations to many of us. Random News/Ain’t it Thoughts about football.

It’s Friday but not Friday at Five o’clock. Yes, this is a problem but in my head I’m an amateur sniper so I can wait. Until then let’s talk about football.   I have some good news—there are 27 days … Continue reading

Ain’t it News/Random Thoughts (Week of 9/28/2012)

S’up fools. I need to clear my head a bit so here’s my attempt at doing that via subpar prose. Randomness is what got me into blogging so I’ll use it as my go to move. Y’all know how this goes. Do play along won’t you? Continue reading

America’s False Sports Narratives

This gallery contains 1 photos.

For the first time years I actively paid attention to the NBA’s playoffs. (Even if they took what seems like three months to end.) To me the NBA has been serving the public the same ham and cheese sandwich with a cup of grape drink for years and we’ve been devouring it with a smile. This year’s playoffs were just compelling to me so I kept track of what was what and who was who.

Rules of the Unwritten Variety

This gallery contains 1 photos.

While watching baseball a few weeks ago a kerfuffle started when Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels intentionally hit Washington Nationals right-fielder Bryce Harper with a pitch to “welcome him to the Major Leagues”. Within normal society throwing a nearly rock-solid projectile at 90 odd miles per hour at another human being represents assault but within the constructs of baseball doing what Hamels did just represents one of many unwritten rules Continue reading

Post Number 200 and The Things I’ve Learned

So this is my de facto 200th blog post. I call it “de facto” because my foray into this here started on Tuesday, March 29th 2005 when I sat down at my desk buried deep within the law library of the firm that I worked for, opened my Hotmail account, composed an e-mail with the subject line “Random Thoughts: Yes, it’s a slow day at the job”. I added a bunch of friends and family into the address line and clicked the send button. I did 20 or so of these e-mail and they don’t officially county for jack but I think they were still important because I put a bunch of crazy into the world and no one who received one of these e-mails didn’t try to have me sent to the booby hatch.

Signs That You May Be a Negro Whisperer

“My boss asked me what “This, that and the third meant.”

These were the words uttered by Miss Moneypenny on Saturday morning as we watched CNN and whatever else passes for Saturday morning TV nowadays. I took a sip of coffee, smirked and said “You’re a Negro whisperer.”

The Post Red Tails Breakdown… Just Some Thoughts

After the build-up last week to see George Lucas’ Red Tails, Miss Moneypenny and I ventured out to the movies for the first time since my birthday in May. While braving the rain and developing a new-found dislike for seagulls we copped two tickets, some popcorn, a couple of Icees, and took our seats. [i] As I expressed last week I had my potential issues with what Red Tails may be so it was time to see what was what.

My Hopes and Concerns About The Film Red Tails

This gallery contains 1 photos.

There are more than a few badly kept secrets about me. The first is that I’m awfully fond of pork-skins and Anheuser Busch products. (In tandem or separate.) Another is couple of secrets is that I like watching explosions and fighting hobos on Wednesday nights. (Never in tandem.) Finally, one of the biggest, badly kept secrets about me is that I’m a massive history/WWII nerd. Continue reading
