Random News/Ain’t it Thoughts (Week of 2/15/13) — If There’s a Cure For This…

Man, what a week!

There were a lot of happenings happening this week. Chris Dorner decided to play Frank Castle. (The rest of the country talks a ton of smack about the south but let’s be honest. When Folks up north or out west, specifically California, decide to show their a**es they TURN IT ALL THE WAY UP.) Soul Brother Number 1 (That’s what I’m going to be called when I’m the president.) a/k/a Honolulu Slim b/k/a Barack H. Obama gave a State of the Union speech. (That I fell asleep on.) Lastly, yesterday was Valentine’s Day, which I hope y’all enjoyed (In honor of that I’ve placed numerous songs throughout the post to help ease the Friday morning love hangover. Hopefully these cuts will help you fondly remember what was put on or in you last night.)

Random Thoughts: My Favorite Sh*t of 2011

2011 AD was truly something else. It was neither a good nor bad year but a year none the less. Life kept on moving and I was thankful for every second of it. (It’s still real in the field though.) I would like to think that I’ve grown a little and made some all-around improvements. I know everyone is getting ready for 2012 but I just wanted to let everyone in some of the things I enjoyed in 2011. This won’t take too long and you’ll only feel a slight sting… Consider yourselves favorited b**ches. Continue reading

Please Come Home … (A Hard Eight For Christmas)

Christmas will be here in a few days and after that a new year. One of the best things about the holidays is that people tend to get over themselves. After the removal of sticks from rears en masse there is a list of good things that make folks happy this time of year. The time with friends and family is priceless. Then there’s the choice of eating yourself into oblivion. After that, I’m sure there’s some distilled “spirits” involved. One of my absolute favorite things about this time of year is the music. Christmas songs come in two forms: Awesome and horrifically bad.

Torch Songs

I seldom devote entire posts to music. I’ll occasionally attach an mp3 file for the listening pleasure of the 13 but blogging about music definitely isn’t my milieu. (Again, shouts to Lala and Reecie two very underrated music bloggers. If they ever tag-teamed they definitely be on some Hawk and Animal sh*t.) This morning, while ironing my trousers, getting ready for another day at the cotton patch Ray Charles’ “Drown in My Own Tears” randomly shuffled through my ear buds. Ray is undoubtedly the man. Hearing “Drown in My Own Tears” made me think that Ray could sing the hell out of a torch song. By definition a torch song is a love song that deals with the loss of or unrequited love. Infidelity and heartbreak are almost always common elements in torch songs. Continue reading

Purple Tape Sh*t/Stuck Off The Realness

Almost two weeks ago several superhero types and I all gathered in Charlotte to see The Rock the Bells Tour. Tasked with witnessing some mid-1990’s awesomeness, my brother @dickyoungjr, portions of @thegoodoleboys, @MusyDoeKnow, and @Eclipz_SC (Please watch this!) all came together at the Fillmore for some fellowship. We considered ourselves blessed because the Charlotte leg of the tour featured Raekwon & Ghostface Killah with Cappadonna in tow performing the bulk of the content from the legendary Only Built for Linx while Mobb Deep did the same with their vaunted CD, The Infamous.

The Arbiters of Blackness and Other Things

One of the things that I constantly notice while perusing the Internets is that people (myself included) are opinionated as hell. (Actually I noticed this a few years ago but I only decided to write about it the other day, so I’ll stick with that.) Americans are opinionated as hell, which is awesome but when it comes to certain topics you usually can guarantee the responses from the readers are going to be polarizing. This stems from a train of thought based on the idea that all opinions are fine… if they agree with mine. Continue reading

Manhood and Stuff…

Last week I talked with my mama for about 20 minutes or so. She and I discussed my birthday and the usual questions were asked about birthdays and what not. (People forget sometimes that their birthdays are monumental days for their parents too, especially the mothers. I mean a few hours of labor are a memorable event for a woman. Just saying.)
