We’re in the heart baseball season and sadly I cannot watch a single pitch.
You see, my Daddy, Stephen. Sr. passed a month ago Tuesday and baseball was one of the things my Daddy and I could easily talk about. It’s not that we weren’t close but we were just two extremely terse men of different times (He was born in 1932 and I was born in 1979 and baseball was one of the things that we both loved to watch.)

Thursday night when it became apparent that my NCAA brackets were going to end up looking like Mitch “Blood” Green’s face after his infamous street fight with Mike Tyson, I whipped out my Kindle and watched this week’s episode of TNT’s Southland. [i] After I finished watching I was reminded of an article the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Yes, that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) wrote for the most recent issue of Esquire entitled “What Primetime TV Tells Us About Being a Man” which deals with the rights and wrongs of how men are depicted on television.

During the course of a week I spend a goodly amount of time in front of a sink and mirror, shaving my head. This mostly due to the facts that I have a large head, I like my sh*t to look nice and tight, and I don’t have the accent to pull of the Jason Statham cut. One of the ancillary effects that come from me: A. Having a large head B. Favoring my sh*t looking nice and tight and finally C. Not having the accent to pull of the eroded hairline look is that I use my time in front of the sink and mirror to reflect on life and brainstorm. Continue reading
Man, what a week!
There were a lot of happenings happening this week. Chris Dorner decided to play Frank Castle. (The rest of the country talks a ton of smack about the south but let’s be honest. When Folks up north or out west, specifically California, decide to show their a**es they TURN IT ALL THE WAY UP.) Soul Brother Number 1 (That’s what I’m going to be called when I’m the president.) a/k/a Honolulu Slim b/k/a Barack H. Obama gave a State of the Union speech. (That I fell asleep on.) Lastly, yesterday was Valentine’s Day, which I hope y’all enjoyed (In honor of that I’ve placed numerous songs throughout the post to help ease the Friday morning love hangover. Hopefully these cuts will help you fondly remember what was put on or in you last night.)

Of late America has been having a conversation with itself about one of our great loves: guns. (Jesus, money, sex, narcissism, alcohol, and football are also on the list of America things America goes, dare I say it “Apey” in the paint for.) Unless you’ve been under a rock then you know why we’ve been chatting about our firepower and its place in our lives. On one side of the conversation you have politicians and citizens who would like to limit and regulate the type of firearms that can be purchased while setting up a comprehensive process to obtain guns. On the other hand you have other politicians, the National Rifle Association, and independent citizens who thinking any sort of regulation of weapons is a bad idea or would set a precedent that would allow the government to run roughshod over the Second Amendment (A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.)
